Music Theory

Music Theory is an advanced, college prep course designed to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score.  These abilities will be developed through various listening, performance, written, creative, and analytical exercises.  Although the course focuses on music from the Common Practice Period (1600-1900), materials and processes found in other styles and genres are also studied.

CLASS 10 - Feb 14 (Due Feb 16th)

CLASS 2

2.5, 1-6.

Major Scale - WWHWWWH
Natural Minor Scale - WHWWHWW.  Also like scale degrees 6-6 of a major scale.
Harmonic Minor scale is like a  natural minor scale but with raised 7th scale degree (creates 1 1/2 steps between 6-7)
Melodic Minor scale raises both 6-7 on the way UP to avoid the 1 1/2 step interval of harmonic minor, but is a natural minor scale going down..

Relative Minor / Major.  The relationship of minor and major keys that share the same key signature (and therefore, same notes).  If given a Major key, go down a minor 3rd from the tonic to find the relative minor (relative minor is scale degree 6 of a major scale).  If given a minor key, go up a minor 3rd from the tonic to find the relative major (relative major is scale degree 3 of a minor scale).
